Employees of the Department of Computer Science of the Lublin University of Technology, the Archdiocesan Museum of Religious Art in Lublin and the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin Museum began cooperation on a project regarding 3D scanning of liturgical vestments. This is probably the first project of this type in Poland. At the beginning, the digitisation will concern 3 vestments from the Catholic University Museum and 3 liturgical vestments from the Archdiocesan Museum.
The scanning will be carried out by employees associated with the “Lab 3D” laboratorium of the Department of Computer Science under the supervision of prof. Jerzy Montusiewicz. The digitisation of liturgical vestments: chasubles, tunics and copes will be made using several technologies: laser scanning, scanning in structured light technology and using photogrammetry. The aim of this approach is to conduct research on the suitability and effectiveness of particular technologies for objects such as liturgical vestments.
On Wednesday, January 3, 2024, preliminary work began on the implementation of the project within the hospitable walls of the warehouse of the Archdiocesan Museum. The Department of Computer Science was represented by Prof. Jerzy Montusiewicz and Anna Sałamacha, the Catholic University Museum by Prof. Agnieszka Bender (museum director) and Anna Szlązak-Nowak, and the Archdiocesan Museum by Mrs Jagoda Maryjewska. With the consent of the Director of the Archdiocesan Museum, Fr. Łukasz Trzciński, research stations were prepared in the museum, 2 mannequins were obtained and chasubles were selected for the first scanning.
