On September 16, 2026, a meeting of the Council of the MBL Museum in Sanok took place. As the body overseeing the open-air museum’s operations, the Council deliberated on issues arising from the fire and destruction of several museum structures, including the 17th-century Church of St. Nicholas (https://misyjne.pl/pozar-zabytkowego-kosciola-sw-mikolaja-w-sanoku-splonal-w-nocy-lacznie-z-wyposazeniem/). In addition to permanent Council members, Museum Director Marcin Krowiak invited representatives from the district authorities and the State Fire Service, as well as staff from the Department of Computer Science: Prof. Jerzy Montusiewicz, Prof. Marek Miłosz, and Dr. Jacek Kęsik. Our participation stemmed from the fact that, on March 26–27, 2023, staff associated with the Lab 3D group at the Lublin University of Technology’s Department of Computer Science (J. Montusiewicz, M. Miłosz, M. Badurowicz, S. Skulimowski) had performed 3D scans of the church’s interior and exterior structure using laser scanning, terrestrial photogrammetry, and drone-based imaging. 3D models—both point-based and mesh—generated by Dr. J. Kęsik were presented at the Council meeting, along with information regarding their accuracy and potential applications, such as the possible reconstruction of the church, VR visualizations of its original appearance, interactive web presentations, and 360-degree panoramas. Council members responded very positively to the news that a digital twin of the church exists. It could be used for a potential physical or digital reconstruction of the church. To this end, Lab 3D has committed to handing over data regarding the church’s dimensions and appearance (both exterior and interior), acquired in 2023, to the management of the MBL museum. Furthermore, the museum administration plans to organize a special exhibition on the burnt church, in which the digital 3D models developed by Lab 3D will play a key role.
