Timetable:
A working Linux system is required for the “Parallel and Distributed Programming” and “Linux Daemon Programming” courses.
Preferably in the form of a “normally installed” system on your own computers.
If someone does not have Linux installed and decides to install it, please remember the basic “common sense” rules:
– before installation, make a full copy of the contents of the disk (I recommend Clonezilla) to an external medium,
– reducing the size of the Windows partition to make room for the Linux operating system does not pose any major problems. However, moving a Windows partition or changing its beginning is more difficult (restoring Windows operation). I recommend GParted for this work.
– a common question: “which distribution is the best?” – according to me, any one is good, but the best one is the one for which you have the easiest way to get help from your “local Guru”, i.e. a friend, teacher etc.
If you do not decide to fully install the Linux system, it is possible to use a Linux virtual machine. In my opinion, it is easier and more pleasant to use Linux for normal use (or alternately with Windows and Linux) than to learn Linux by running it only occasionally on a virtual machine. The decision is yours.
For your convenience, on my Polish version of my web page there are a few different virtual machines (under VirtualBox) to choose from. 32-bit systems will be less hardware demanding.
Students using M1/M2/M3 Macs basically have a UNIX system that is suitable for most activities (there are some differences, such as using zsh by default instead of bash like in Linux). If you want to use Linux, I recommend the UTM virtualizer and a ready image from the UTM website, e.g. Debian with the lightweight LXDE graphical environment.
