On October 3, 2026, a special event titled “Heritage Celebration – The Church from Matczyn” took place at the Lublin Open Air Village Museum (an open-air museum in the Sławinek district). The event marked the 340th anniversary of the construction of the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from Matczyn (built around 1686), the oldest surviving wooden parish church in the Lublin region. The program included Holy Mass celebrated by Fr. Leszek Niedźwiedź, the parish priest from Matczyn; a series of lectures on the church’s history, its relocation to the museum, and its conservation; a folk fair organized by rural housewives’ associations and support groups for people with disabilities; and performances by artistic groups from the Bełżyce municipality.
Staff members associated with the 3D Lab at the Department of Computer Science, Lublin University of Technology, played an active role in preparing the event. Under the supervision of Dr. Jacek Kęsik, the team (Dr. Kamil Żyła and Piotr Tokarski, MSc) carried out 3D scanning of the church’s exterior and interior across two sessions (June and September), utilizing TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning), CRP (Close-Range Photogrammetry), and LAP (Low-Altitude Photogrammetry using UAV – unmanned aerial vehicles). Additionally, Prof. Jerzy Montusiewicz delivered a lecture titled “Practical Aspects of Generating 3D Digital Twins of Cultural Heritage Objects,” in which he presented, among other things, 3D digital point cloud and mesh models of the interior and exterior of the church from Matczyn.
These joint activities were carried out under an agreement signed between Lublin University of Technology and the Open-Air Village Museum in Lublin in February 2025. Extensive photo coverage of the event: https://skansen.lublin.pl/pl/aktualnosci/swieto-zabytku-foto/
